What “self-learning” should mean in production
Self-learning is not merely learning a new fact. It is evaluating the system’s own prior action or inaction against an objective, changing future behaviour and applying that correction when the relevant context returns.

The missed-intervention test
Suppose Morpheus knew a warranty deadline existed but failed to surface it when the relevant service event occurred. Learning the deadline is external learning. Recognising that the omission violated the workflow objective, changing the intervention rule and surfacing it next time is self-learning.
Objectives are the denominator
A system cannot judge whether its prior conduct was helpful, harmful or irrelevant unless it knows what matters. Objectives therefore need owners, scope, weight, provenance, constraints and an intervention policy.
The loop must close
The complete loop is: detect significance, retain the right state, recall it at the right moment, surface or act within scope, learn from correction and verify that future behaviour changed.
The four rungs, in order
Memory stores and recalls. Information is retained and can be retrieved when asked for. It is passive until someone goes looking.
External learning learns about your business — facts about people, clients, workflows and the world. "This reviewer prefers brevity." This improves answers. It does not change when the system speaks.
Self-learning learns about the system's own conduct. It evaluates its prior action or inaction — what it missed, rushed, or failed to surface — and updates its own future behaviour. "I held that fact and did not raise it when it mattered."
Agency acts before being asked. When the relevant context recurs, the system initiates: a warning, a contradiction check, a recommendation, an escalation. "This contradicts what you decided seven weeks ago."
Why the distinction decides everything
Most products marketed as self-learning are performing external learning. They retain a preference and apply it the next time you prompt them. That is useful, and it is not the same capability.
The test is not whether a system remembers. It is whether the system decides, unprompted, that something it remembers matters right now — and whether it is right often enough to be worth the interruption. A system that interrupts constantly is noise. A system that never interrupts is an archive.
The objective frame is the gate
None of this works without an objective. A system cannot judge whether its silence was correct, or whether interrupting was justified, unless it knows what mattered.
In a business, what matters is an objective — and objectives are not one flat list. They nest, they carry different weight, and they change by workspace and by workflow. A system holding them implicitly cannot explain why it interrupted you. A system holding them explicitly can.
Morpheus holds an objective hierarchy across organisation, workspace, workflow, channel and role, task and constraints. Each objective carries an owner, a weight, a confidence, its provenance, and an intervention policy that decides whether the right response is to notify, recommend, escalate, or stay silent.
How to apply this when evaluating any product
Ask which rung a vendor is actually on. "It learns from your usage" is rung two. "It gets better over time" is usually rung two. Rung three requires the system to hold an opinion about its own prior conduct. Rung four requires it to act on that opinion without being prompted.
Then ask the harder question: against what does it evaluate itself? A system without an explicit objective cannot score its own restraint, and a system that cannot score its restraint cannot learn from staying quiet.
Where Cortex and Eye sit
Cortex is the reflection layer. It reads what has happened — activity, outcomes, prior beliefs, proposal results — and decides whether to create, reinforce, amend or retire what Morpheus holds. It is where learning about your business and learning about itself meet.
Eye is the oversight surface. It is where what changed becomes visible: what Morpheus now believes, what it proposes to change, and what is waiting on you. Nothing is trusted because Morpheus generated it — proposals are reviewed, accepted, corrected or rejected.

The objective hierarchy is live. Cortex forms beliefs, proposals and reflections against it. A fully mature self-learning loop across every surface is being built, not finished.
We do not claim to be the only system working on this. Memory infrastructure from Mem0, Zep and Letta is genuinely strong, and the honest observation is only that their public documentation describes storage, retrieval, temporal context and stateful agents rather than objective-weighted self-evaluation with unprompted intervention. That is a statement about published documentation, not proof that the capability is absent.

Can a system personalise without self-learning?
Yes. Remembering a preference or account fact can improve relevance without evaluating the system’s own behaviour.
Is automation the same as agency?
No. Automation follows a predefined trigger. Agency evaluates whether intervention is warranted in the current objective context.
Why are proposed belief changes reviewed?
Because a system can infer the wrong lesson. Weak beliefs should remain provisional until corroborated or approved.
